Free Agent running back, Steven Jackson, has made a plea with America to “Save the Running Back”. He’s right, the position definitely needs saving. Last year, there were only two rushers, Demarco Murray and LeSean McCoy, with over 300 carries in a season compared to ten years ago when there were ten running backs that reached the 300 carry mark.
The game has changed. It’s truly a quarterback’s league now. The past two NFL drafts haven’t had any running backs selected in the first round. Everything is cyclical though, and right now the game is all about speed. The defensive lineman and linebackers are getting smaller and faster to combat the spread offenses. Some brilliant offensive mind is going to come up with a retro idea to have a massive offensive line and punch defenses in the mouth drive after drive after drive. The running back isn’t dead, he’s just hibernating. Don’t worry America.
