You love football? Cool. I’ll continue. If you love football there’s no doubt in my mind that you’ve been asked which do you prefer — college football or the NFL?
In my experience, I find that people from damn near everywhere but the Northeast enjoy college football on some level, while everyone in the Northeast loves the NFL and the NFL ONLY. Once you break it down, I think the big cities with more things to do are often busy on Saturdays and overlook college football unless it’s Dallas, Houston, LA, New Orleans, Miami, Seattle, or Phoenix —all big cities with major college football programs only a stones throw away.
Birmingham, Alabama? Of course they’re going to be purely college football fans, there isn’t an NFL team anywhere near them. But a place like Oklahoma City with two major college football teams but no NFL team is going to gravitate to their nearest professional franchise, the Dallas Cowboys fans because it’s only 3 hours away from OKC.
So when people ask me, which do I prefer college or pro? I turn right back around and ask them why do I have to choose? I mean I don’t. I like both equally the same. I’m a firm believer that you can’t be in love with two people at the same time. I don’t even know how the hell people get in situations like that, but that’s a story for another lonely NYC drunken night. Either way, for a moment, I’m going to sympathize with the person simultaneously in love with two people.
I’m a heterosexual male, so that’s the stance I’m going to take with this. Let’s call the NFL, Denise, and we’ll call college football, Alexis. I can end my explanation before I even start if I want. They’re both women. The greatest creatures ever created, so why wouldn’t you be in love with more than one? I won’t do that, but I could. Oh yeah, most people have a type, so let’s say they’re both medium tone Aaliyah complexion-esque black females. Long natural hair. Beautiful brown eyes. Oval faces and soft skin where size 34b breasts sit tall and proud. Innie belly buttons, no outties over here. No hips, (THAT’S MY TYPE) not ass for days, only a full American work day and that’s just enough for me. Thighs and legs on point. Essentially they’re both 5’3” 124 lbs. that were both Division 1 track and field sprinters. They’re the same person physically. The differences lie in their personalities.
Denise was a part of Jack and Jill. She comes from a stable traditional African-American family. Both of her parents went to HBCU’s. She’s well cultured and feels like too many stamps in her passport just aren’t enough. She gets ratchet and disrespects club couches with her red bottoms, but only in venues where #thelististight. She now works as VP of marketing of a Fortune 500 company.
Alexis was a hood baby, and a beautiful one at that. She was the baby of four children all of the same mother and different fathers. She was the Duchess of Double Dutch in her hometown and “red” was a Kool-Aid flavor. Although her school system was terrible, Alexis was remarkable in the classroom. She was just as fast off the track as she was on it. Despite her upbringing, her self-awareness is top notch so she was able to overcome her past. She now stars as an Executive Creative Director at one of the country’s most respected advertising agencies.
At the end of the day both ladies look great on paper. Neither are bat shit crazy. They have good credit, money in savings and 401ks. The only thing you have deal with is Denise’s tendency to wear her bourgeoisie like a badge of honor and Alexis’ crazy ass family that’s crosses the line with public decency once a week. At the end of the day, the two young women are both the same. You really can’t lose with either. So, if you happened to fall in love with both and were forced to chose, I wouldn’t blame you if you had a hard time choosing only one.
What’s the difference between college football and the NFL? Yes, the NFL is played at a much faster pace with better athletes. The NFL is a coaches and quarterbacks league. The college game is all about recruiting the best athletes. College football has more tradition? Yeah, I’ve heard that but the Bears, Cowboys, Steelers, Redskins have just as much tradition as your Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, Michigan Wolverines and USC Trojans. Are the differences in the way the game is played? I see the spread option being used in both levels. In my opinion, the spread offense and 7 on 7 passing leagues have done more to bridge the gap between FBS and NFL than anything else in football.
The games on both levels are virtually the same. They’re all out aerial assaults for your Saturday and Sunday viewing pleasure. The Baylor Bears led the nation in scoring last season with 52 points per game. The NFL scoring average as gone up every year for the past three years being 23 points a game last year.
Asking me to choose between college and the NFL is like asking me to pick which sibling I like the best or even worse, which parent I prefer. Can I not just enjoy both the same? I can and I will.
