ESPN dubbed this as the Year of the Quarterback. Not sure if they just needed a name for a tv show theme or they knew QBs would break records this year. five NFL QBs would throw for over 5,000 yards and Drew Brees would break Dan Marino’s 13 year old record for single season passing yards. As great a year QBs had, Tight Ends had a better year. The 2011-2012 NFL season was really the year of the Tight End.
Rob Gronkowski, Vernon Davis, Jimmy Graham, Aaron Hernandez, Antonio Gates and the OG himself — Tony Gonzales all dominated this year. Gronk set a Tight End record for receiving yards(1,327) and touchdowns (17) this year on 90 catches this year. Vernon Davis single handedly beat the Saints and almost beat the Giants by himself as well in the playoffs. Jimmy Graham made the replaced Jeremy Shockey as the Saints starting Tight End as the best TE to ever come out of The U. Aaron Hernandez became a tattooed Kevin McHale to Gronk. Hernandez and Gronkowski went ape this year with 169 receptions, 2,237 yards, and 24 touchdowns all of which were records for Tight Ends on the same team. Antonio Gates and
With the NFL making it virtually impossible with defenders to be physical with receivers they have free reign to roam the field, but no one expected the tight ends to get in on the action as much as they have. The NFL is a copy cat league so after seeing the total destruction that Hernandez and Gronk wreaked on the league this are looking up for this year’s Top Tight End prospects.
