Michael Sam will go down in history a few times this year. He’s already made his mark by being the first SEC Defensive Player of the year to come out and admit that he’s gay. He’ll get more attention when he’s drafted this May and also when he plays his first regular season football game in September. Here are my thoughts on Sam’s announcement.
1. Wow.
2. The kid has been through hell already with his upbringing so coming out and being gay shouldn’t be a problem for him at all.
3. I think it’s pretty amazing that he’s been “out” since the beginning of last season and the media never found out or ever reported anything.
4. I don’t think his draft status will be affecting by announcing that he’s gay.
5. People say some ugly things in the NFL, especially during the game. I wonder how many people come at him with homophobic slurs.
6. There’s a first time for everything. The courage that it takes to do this is remarkable. I wonder how many people will now feel comfortable and follow Sam’s lead.
