Chip Sarafin, offensive lineman for Arizona State, told Compete Magazine recently that he’s gay. Sarafin’s announcement makes him the first openly gay college football player.
Sarafin had this to say,
“It was really personal to me and it benefited my peace of mind greatly,”
ASU coach Todd Graham showed support for Sarafin,
“We are a brotherhood that is not defined by cultural and personal differences, but rather an individual’s commitment to the Sun Devil Way,” he said in a statement. “Chip is a fifth-year senior and a Scholar Baller, a graduate and a master’s student. His commitment to service is unmatched and it is clear he is on his way to leading a successful life after his playing career, a goal that I have for every student-athlete. Diversity and acceptance are two of the pillars of our program, and he has full support from his teammates and the coaching staff.”
Ok, all done with the facts and what not. Here are my thoughts on the situation.
1. Michael Sam opened the flood gates.
2. Who cares if Chip Sarafin is gay?
3. It doesn’t matter what his sexuality is. Can he play football?
4. Expect more players to be comfortable about who they are and make similar announcements.
5. I can’t wait for the day when a player’s sexuality isn’t considered “news” anymore.
6. Wait? He’s a reserve lineman who’s never played a down in four seasons at ASU? Ok, now I really don’t care. I mean I wouldn’t care if he was an All-American and came out, but really….we’re talking about a reserve lineman. Let’s move on and play football folks.
