The Cleveland Browns announced today that Brian Hoyer will be the starting QB for the Cleveland Browns season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 7th. Johnny Manziel will be the backup. Here are my thoughts.
1. Did you see Manziel this past Monday night? He looked terrible. Not that Hoyer looked much better, but he’s the veteran and has more experience.
Hoyer has been 8/20 for 108 yards and no touchdowns in 2 preseason games.
Manziel has been 14/27 for 128 yards and 1 touchdown in 2 preseason games.
2. The Browns play the Steelers, Saints and Ravens to start the season. That’s Dick Lebeau, Rob Ryan and Dean Pees, all very good defensive coordinators that will do nothing but fuck up a rookie NFL QBs confidence. Do you want Manziel on the field if he’s not ready?
3. I mean I’m sure this gesture by Manziel on Monday Night didn’t help.
4. In the past three seasons, E.J. Manuel, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden, Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, and Andy Dalton were all rookie QBs and opening day starters. You mean to tell me Manziel couldn’t beat out Brian Hoyer?
Let’s call a spade what it is. Manziel isn’t that fast at all. He’s nothing like Michael Vick. He made plays in college playing sandlot football, and that simply won’t cut it in the league. Look, if RGIII is running a 4.38 and getting tracked down by defensive lineman, then what do you think if going to happen to Manziel and his 4.68?
5. The Browns staff will never admit it, but Manziel’s off season antics cost him the starting job. It may have not been a direct correlation, but you know how the old guys think. “Maybe if he wasn’t always out in the media and in his playbook, he’d be playing better.”
6. After the Browns go 0-3, after their bye week in Week 4, Manziel will be the starter in Week 5 to play Titans. He will play well and then he’ll be brought back to reality when the Browns play the Steelers at home.
